METAL THREAD, PICTURE
1996An example of an original Western Australian embroidery in late 20th C by distinguished member of the W.A. Embroiderers’ Guild, Joy Holman, who in 1985 was awarded Life Membership for her significant contribution.
The expansion of original creative work within the Guild was being encouraged. One lesson given by the Guild’s founder, Rusty Walkley, was to choose a word, in this case ‘HARMONY’, and interpret it a traditional technique.
The letters of ‘HARMONY’ cut from gold kid are appliqued onto a background of black woollen twill.
On left hand side is a circle 130mm diameter which represents the world: hand couched blue swirling lines represent the oceans around the continents of Africa and the Americas.
