CUTWORK, TRAYCLOTH
This white linen tray cloth was made at the end of the WW I by members of the London Missionary Society and Embroidery Industry (as indicated on the accompanying label). Aim of the Society was to help women earn a wage to feed families.
Research shows the non-denominational missionary LMS was established 1795 – 1895. This was the
British moral responsibility to the population of its growing empire which led to waves of foreign missions to the colonies worldwide, including India.
In each corner of the tray cloth is a lily like flower, surrounded on three sides with leaves, all outlined in buttonhole stitch. Just below the flower, is a cutwork segment.
