KNITTING, SEGMENT
Shetland Isles has been the home of a beautiful style of fine knitting for many years. Made from finely spun wool, the aim of knitters was to make a shawl so fine, it would pass through a wedding ring. The names of the stitches were often renamed to reflect the environment of the knitters.
This beautiful example of delicate knitted lace was cut off a larger piece, unknown use. The finest of Shetland wool knitted in a variety of stitches with 4 main design elements.
Row 1 - 60mm - mesh with nubbles. Row 2 - 180mm – wing like lacy pattern in horizontal rows
Row 3 - 70mm - cable knitting Row 4 - 70mm - triangular scalloped edge in lacy design
