SMOCKING, DRESS, BABY

Overview

Baby dress with blue smocking on yoke is made of 'parachute silk' following WWII. During WWII parachute silk was used to make many garments which created a shortage of the fabric. There was also resentment towards the Japanese about the war and silk.
An American company, Dupont, were asked to produce a fabric similar to 'parachute silk'. This revolutionary new fabric was called nylon.
This baby dress, prettily smocked is an early example of nylon's use for baby wear when nylon was still very difficult to purchase.
