West Australian Baseball League cap – pre-1999
A six-panelled, pre-1999 West Australian Baseball League (WABL) cap with four black nylon mesh panels to the sides and back of the crown and two black polyester fabric panels at the front. Appliqued to the two front panels is the badge of the WABL, which has a black background with the Western Australian State emblem of a stylised gold swan. Encircling the swan is the name of the baseball league in gold thread. The top button is covered in black fabric, as is the underside of the peak. Inside the cap is a black sweatband and a manufacturer's label indicating where it was made, the size and material type. Handwritten on the tag are the initials 'AFL'. The rear size adjuster is black plastic.
With the amalgamation of the West Australian Baseball League Inc. (WABL) and the Baseball Development Foundation Inc. (BDF) on 5 May 1999, Baseball WA Ltd (BWA) was formed. Subsequently the logo and uniforms of the Western Australian State baseball league were changed. This pre-1999 Western Australian State team cap displays the logo of the WABL and was worn by Western Australian Alan Luscombe when umpiring junior or senior games.

Whilst this cap was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Western Australian umpire Ken Smith, the handwritten initials 'AFL' inside the cap indicate it belonged to fellow umpire Alan Luscombe. Both men were prominent umpires at State junior and senior levels. Luscombe also umpired at junior international level. The cap adds to the pre-1999 baseball cap collection of the Museum.
Of historic significance, this cap is representative of the West Australian Baseball League's logo and State uniform pre-1999.
