Western Australian State baseball cap – c.1990s
A Western Australian State baseball cap consisting of a six-panel crown; two front panels are black polyester fabric and four panels on the sides and back are of black nylon mesh. Appliqued to the two front panels is a badge which has a black background and the Western Australian State emblem of a stylised swan in gold thread. The peak is black polyester fabric on the upper side and underside. The top button has the metal stud exposed. The rear size adjuster is black plastic. Inside the cap the two front panels have a white mesh covering. There is also a white cotton sweatband and a manufacturer's label, partly cut off, indicating the cap size and who made it.
With the amalgamation of the West Australian Baseball League Inc. (WABL) and the Baseball Development Foundation Inc. (BDF) on 5 May 1999, Baseball WA Ltd (BWA) was formed. Subsequently the logo and uniforms of the Western Australian State baseball league were changed. This pre-1999 Western Australian team cap was worn by Ken Smith when umpiring State junior or senior games.

The cap, worn by umpire Ken Smith who donated it to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives, adds to the pre-1999 baseball cap collection of the Museum.
Ken Smith, a prominent West Australian Baseball League umpire, became a Life Member of the West Australian Baseball Umpires Association in 1991.
Of historic significance, this cap is representative of a Western Australian State baseball uniform pre-1999. It is in good condition and has excellent provenance.
