Overview

Original autographs of members of the four State teams that competed in the 1938 Australian Baseball Series for the Claxton Shield trophy. Each team has signed on a separate piece of paper, torn from a notebook. Historical information

The 1938 Australian Baseball Series was the fifth annual Claxton Shield Championships, a national baseball tournament. It was held at the WACA Ground and Subiaco Oval in Perth from 3 to 13 August, the first time Perth had hosted the Shield. New South Wales won the Shield for the second time, successfully defending their title from the previous year. Hosts Western Australia had their best finish, losing to New South Wales in the final to finish second overall. The other participating teams were Victoria and South Australia.

Statement of significance

The four original sheets of the 1938 Australian state baseball teams' signatures are rare, well-preserved and historically significant. They identify Australia's elite players in a sport that was growing in popularity as a social pastime for both competitors and spectators. The provenance comes from the authentic signatures and Western Australian vice-captain Glen Dunstan's ownership of them.
