British Red Cross Society collection box - number 2
c. 1915Solid wooden collection box with long slot for coins on top. Both sides are painted with the logo of the Red Cross - a red cross in a white circle -.with the letters B R C and S (British Red Cross Society) placed evenly around the cross.
Along the bottom edge in red paint are the words '7th East Lancs VAD Mens Section'.
Although Voluntary Aid Detachment members were more often women, there were also some male VADs. The VAD units were all numbered. Men's units were given odd numbers and women's even numbers.
The men were employed as sentries, drivers and orderlies, sometimes attached to the Royal Army Medical Corps.
This collection box relates to the 7th East Lancashire VAD Men's Section.
