BEAD WORK, EMBROIDERY, ARTWORK

Overview

Original embroidered artwork, “We are not OK” by Deidre Robb, capturing the world-wide Covid pandemic of 2020, exhibited at the Western Australian Fibre and Textile Association (WAFTA) exhibition “25+ Crossover” in 2022. As the Covid pandemic receded, Deidre gave thought to the issues of recognising cultures in laboratories and mourning jewellery - a result of the effects of the pandemic.

There were 14 individual Petrie dishes containing embroidered representations of specimen cultures.

The Guild has acquired a total of 8, these three donated by Gaynor Ashford and 5 purchased by the Guild.

In each of the three sizes of glass Petrie dishes is a circle of mounted black cotton fabric, each with a unique design embroidered using a variety of beads, sequins and stitching.

a) Bugle beads and delicas 9, seed beads. Circles 4 large 7 small 2 medium and 4 stitched outlines.

b) Seed beads filling voids with sashiko stitching on padded circles.

c) Sequins, seed beads and delicas 5. Sequins and beads raised at right angles.
