Overview

Original embroidered artwork, “We are not OK” by Deidre Robb, capturing the world-wide Covid pandemic of 2020, exhibited at the Western Australian Fibre and Textile Association (WAFTA) exhibition “25+ Crossover” held in 2022. As the Covid pandemic receded, Deidre gave thought to the issues of recognising cultures in laboratories and mourning jewellery - a result of the effects of the pandemic.

Displayed, were 14 individual Petrie dishes containing embroidered representations of specimen cultures.

The Guild has acquired 8, these 5 purchased by the Guild and 3 donated by Gaynor Ashford.

In each of the five glass Petrie dishes is a circle of mounted black cotton fabric each with a unique design embroidered using a variety of beads, sequins and stitching.

a) bugle and delica beads. 3 large hexagonal circles, 2 x medium circles 3x small circles, 20 French knots

b) sequins, seed beads and stem stitch. Padded circles embellished with seed stitch. Outlined with beads

filling void.

c) sequins, seed beads and delica 5. Sequins and beads raised at right angles

d) delica & seed beads size 11, fringing & random seed stitching. French knots surround the off central

beading motif.

e) delica, bugles and clear beads 11, 9, 8. Circular beaded motifs with rays of chain stitch.
