Historical information

Ignite Basketball was initiated by the Armadale Police and Citizens Youth Club and the City of Armadale to give 12-18 year olds an interest and keep them off the streets of a Saturday evening. The program was an expansion of a previous joint program called Midnight Basketball started in 2010.
The first session was held on 30 June 2012. The free program aimed to get mainly at risk children off the street and into a safe environment where they would get dinner, play basketball in teams. Participants could also sign up to gain skills in coaching, refereeing, scoring, administration, tournament organisation, public speaking and leadership. The program was also designed to provide a safe and trusting environment where children who were at risk could be identified and directed to appropriate services for assistance.
The City of Armadale played an active role in the running of the Ignite Basketball program to 2016. In 2017, Save the Children Australia took on the Ignite Basketball program which was still held at the Armadale Arena. It was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis.
