Overview

A blue, roundneck, long raglan sleeved shirt, made out of chlorine resistant polyester.It has [ARMADALE / SWIM SCHOOL / 5] iron on motifs on the back panel and a number [5] on the left chest of the front. Washing instructions sewn into back collar seam.

Historical information

Shirt produced by the City of Armadale for swim instructors at the Armadale Aquatic Centre where the Armadale Swim School was held. Instructors had the task of teaching children how to swim. The number on the shirt was to identify which class a student was in. Similar shirts are still worn by swim school instructors.
The shirt was also designed to help protect the instructors from being burnt by the sun during the summer months thus reducing the risk of skin cancer.

Statement of significance

The shirt was worn by a swimming instructor at the Armadale Aquatic Centre who would have primarily been teaching children how to swim in the early 2000s.
Learning to swim has been considered a life saving skill in Australia due to the vast majority of its population living close to the coast. Local Government Authorities have been involved in teaching children to swim for as long as they have been involved in managing public pools.
