TOOL: HAND IRON, LIPFERT FAMILY

Subcollections
Overview

Tool used by saddlers and harness makers to force a needle through leather. A pear-shaped implement, hollowed out on one side and with a round neck at the narrow end. The neck or stem is cranked. The hollow well is given an indented honeycomb pattern designed to receive and hold the heel of the needle. The neck has a simple indentation at the end, intended to take the heel of the needle when all but the eye of the needle is left to push through. It can also be used to pull a thread tight. A diamond shaped hole is bored transversely in the neck. This is used if the collar or harness needle gets stuck: the hole in the neck is fitted near the diamond-shaped end of the needle so that the neck can be turned from side to side and so loosened.
