DRAWN THREAD, PILLOW SHAM

Overview

A delightful matching pillow sham and nightgown sachet featuring an extensive amount of drawn thread work. (a) Centre section of drawn thread design 540mm x 320 mm. Threads withdrawn from warp and weft to produce a square pattern. Two small sections of fabric remain either side of centre for embroidered initials “E P”. Even border of fabric 23mm deep followed by narrow band of drawn thread 8m. Attached to the border is an edging of white bobbin lace 74mm wide. (b) The sachet has the same design of drawn thread work as above. An even border of fabric 10mm deep followed by narrow band of drawn thread 5mm and 43mm hem. A torchon bobbin lace 70mm wide is attached to the edge.

Statement of significance

Aesthetic: Extensive use of drawn thread work.
Social: Handmade accessories for bedroom was common decoration in 18th and 19th Century.
Provenance: The donor's great grandfather, Alexander Robertson, born near Edinburgh in Scotland circa 1860 arrived in Brisbane in 1883. Alexander moved to W A in 1895 during the gold rush. This child’s dress part is a large donation of family treasures and was probably worn by Elizabeth Price (Grice) (1853 – 1933) when she was a child.
