TOOL, SEWING KIT, MENDING
c. 1900 - 1909A most unusual mending kit, amongst other items, contains a rare egg shaped wooden mushroom with latch hook for mending stockings. A valuable kit for lady of the house for repairing and mending stockings and socks when resources scarce.
A. Taupe linen bag, flap front, with 'Darn the Stockings' embroidered on front in shades of blue stranded cotton,
worked in chain stitch. Narrow crochet edge in pink cotton and pink cord handle 510mm.
Total length 520 mm width 360 mm Flap 110 mm x360 mm.
B. Attached to bag was a floral cotton needleholder - length 205 mm width 65 mm with a blue cotton crochet edge;
inside 2 woollen fabric ‘pages’, containing 2 darning needles each 57mm long and a hand made pin. Now separate.
C. Egg shaped wooden mushroom with latch hook. Mushroom length 125 mm, circumference 140mm
latch hook in wooden holder total length 90mm. Circumference 27mm. Metal hook 20mm.
D. Normal shaped wooden mushroom. Circular top diameter 70 mm: length 95 mm
e. Darning wool/nylon - three sets in strands: (i) ‘Coats’ in shades of grey, (ii) ‘Eagley’ in shades of tan (iii)
‘Woolworths’ in shades of grey and (iv) 6 balls of wool without labels, in brown, beige, taupe and 3 shades of grey.
F (i) & (ii). Cards with ‘Nylusta’ extra fine nylon mending thread for stockings in shades of light brown. 75 x 50mm
g. Packet 50 x 35mm of Flora McDonald sewing needles - Sharps size 6.
h. Tape measure with inches both sides. 60 inches back and front. Metal bar 75mm at start of tape.
i. 'DARNEEZE' Hosiery Mending Super Mercerised Lisle thread in ‘Fashionable Shades = assorted shades of tan
on a card 138 x 63 mm. Donated by Soozie Steele.
j. Fine Hose Darning Thread in dark tan shade on a card 50 x 40mm. Donated by Soozie Steele.
The nylon thread (f), hosiery lisle thread (i), fine hose thread (j) and packet of needles (g) were donated by Soozie Steele, and added to the kit in order to provide a more complete kit for displays.
