Overview

Original image.

The image features a group of Whittakers' employees, dressed in work clothes, standing outside the enlarged premises consisting of two separate sheds. The one on the left displays the word 'Ironmongery' and items of Whittakers' merchandise (Window Glass, Paints, Oils etc.) are printed on to the front. The second shed reads 'Whittaker Bros. Timber Yard and Steam Joinery Works'. A sign reading 'Subiaco Timber Yard' bridges the two buildings and a man standing at the front of a cart drawn by two horses, appears underneath. Another team of horses drawing a huge roller can be seen in front of the second shed. One of the men rests a metal wheel against his knees and a black dog sits in the foreground. This Whittakers yard was still in use until its demolition in 1973. Note: The fourth person from the left is Arthur Whittaker. The black dog was his favourite cocker spaniel. Ref: Moore B.
