PHOTOGRAPH: THE MAKING OF ROKEBY ROAD
c. 1900Mounted original.
The exact location is uncertain, but may be near the Hay Street/Rokeby Road intersection. On the left hand side of the image is a team of horses pulling a huge roller. Workers stand around in the road and a man in the centre is identified as 'Dad'. The men work for Wallace and Lyons who had the carting contract for the material used in forming the road. There are several other horses and carts and a boy sitting with a man on one of these in the background is identified as 'Perc', who is about eight years old. At the right stand a young girl and small boy. There is a row of shops behind the men. The one in the centre is M. Tighe's Cheap Cash Grocer, obviously the forerunner of his more substantial building on the corner of Barker and Rokeby Roads. The shop next to Tighe's is that of Wallace and Lyons, General Carriers, Furniture Removed, Agents for W.A. Builders. The dark shape of a dog curled up in the road can be seen at the left hand side of the image. In the background are outlines of wooden buildings through the trees. 'H.C.K. Drinkwater Coy, Subiaco, tel. 433' is printed on the mount underneath the image.
