Red Cross cardboard fundraising pin for prisoners of war
c. 1940Rectangular Red Cross cardboard fundraising pin for prisoners of war. It depicts a soldier in khaki uniform standing inside a tall barbed wire fence including coils of wire on the ground. A dark silhouette of a person looking in from the outside is on the right hand side of the pin.
In bold red letters across the top is written 'His sacrifice for me', while one the lower edge between two red cross symbols are the words 'My sacrifice for Him'. The background of the card is coloured dark reddish brown.
It has a metal pin threaded through a small hole at the top for attachment.
The Australian Red Cross Society played a vital role in fundraising and providing support for Australian prisoners of war (POWs) during and after World War Two. A key initiative was the Prisoner of War Adoption Scheme, where local groups collected donations to fund Red Cross parcels for POWs. The Red Cross also expanded its welfare services to address wartime needs, including assistance to ex-servicemen, women, and their families, and information gathering about missing or captured soldiers.
A large number of items in the collection relate to the work of the Australian Red Cross Society both at home and abroad.
