Australian Red Cross Society Hand Book and Diary 1944
1944Australian Red Cross Society (S.A. Division) Hand Book and Diary 1944 in the form of a notepad. It has been sold to raise funds for the Red Cross to help in supporting prisoners of war and the sick and wounded servicemen and women.
The front cover features sprays of wattle flowers and leaves on a dark blue background, while the back cover shows a Red Cross flag on a flagpole, blowing in the wind. The covers are made from card while the internal pages are made from cream coloured paper with either blue or black printing. There are two staples at the top to hold the pages within the card covers.
Each double sided page features a calendar of the month on the upper side, as well as notable dates within the month and a patriotic saying or plea to support the Red Cross. The lower side has room for notes and an illustration relating to a Red Cross Service, often referred to in the saying above.
The end of the hand book features several pages of information including first aid hints, parcels for prisoners of war, Australian facts and figures, time zones and household measures. There is a page for telephone numbers and another for notes. The inside back cover features testimonials from recip[inets of Red Cross help - soldiers, former prisoners of war, convalescing hospital patients and their families.
There are some annotations in pen and pencil throughout the hand book. There is a hole punched through the covers and pages at the bottom of the book, so that it can be hung up.
The Australian Red Cross Society played an active role in supporting soldiers, prisoners of war and their families both at home and abroad during wartime. This hand book and diary highlights some of the many services they provided.
It was produced to raise funds for the South Australian Division of the Australian Red Cross Society.
It is interesting to note that many of the special dates featured references to military events including those occurring prior to 1944 in World War Two, such as 'Fall of Singapore Day, February 15 1942'. The day both World Wars started are listed, as are the Armistice and peace declarations. Special days to recognise other allied countries are also shown - Canadian Dominion Day, U.S. Independence Day, French National Day, Empire Day, New Zealand Dominion Day - and birthdays of their leaders recognised - President Roosevelt, Washington Day and the King's Birthday. Most of these dates would not feature in current calendars..
The illustration for Red Cross Service no.3 - 'Cares for prisoners of war' is the same as that used on a cardboard fundraising pin held in the collection.
