Red Cross Appeal fundraising tags - Allied National Flag Day 1943
1943Two rectangular cardboard fundraising pins or tags with small circular holes at the top through which is threaded cotton for hanging.
The card has a cream coloured background on both sides, with one side featuring seven flags of the allies (Australia, United Kingdom, United States of America, Republic of China (Taiwan), The Soviet Union, The Netherlands and Greece), below which is a curved dark blue area with cream writing 'Allied National Flag Day 1943'.
The other side has the Red Cross symbol at the top and the words 'Red Cross' in shadow writing, under which is the fundraising target '£ 300-000' and 'Appeal 1943', all printed in red.
One card has a small length of green thread while the other has a longer length of cream thread. One card has 'May 17-24' printed in pencil across the top and the red writing from the back of an adjacent card transferred onto the front.
According to the Daily Mercury newspaper from Mackay in Queensland, dated 17 May 1943, Red Cross Special Appeal Week commenced that day and 'ALLIES' FLAG DAY Emblems' would be on sale in the street for 1/- each. Other events included musical follies, a band performance, socials and dances.
