Claxton Shield - Western Australia's 60th Year Commemorative Trophy

Overview

This is a wooden trophy in the shape of the State of Western Australia. Attached to the top half of the trophy is the plastic symbol of the West Australian Baseball League (WABL). The inner border of the logo is black with gold-coloured lettering and in the centre is a black stylised swan on a yellow background. The outer border and surrounding laurel wreath and ribbon are gold-coloured flecked with other colours. A rectangular gold-coloured metal plate with angled corners sits below the WABL logo. It is engraved with the names of the 1938 Western Australian Claxton Shield team and the location and date of the contest.

The trophy sits on a rectangular, bevel-edged wooden base. Attached to the front edge of the base is a rectangular gold-coloured metal plate with angled corners. It is engraved with the commemoration, who presented the trophy and who received it.

The manufacturer's label is attached under the base of the trophy.

Historical information

The 1938 Claxton Shield was the fifth annual Claxton Shield, an Australian national baseball tournament. It was held at the Western Australian Cricket Association Ground (WACA) and Subiaco Oval in Perth from 3 to 13 August. It was the first time Perth had hosted the Shield and only the second year that Western Australia had competed in the national competition.

New South Wales won the Shield for the second time, successfully defending their title from the previous year. Hosts Western Australia had their best finish, losing to New South Wales in the final to finish second overall. The other participating teams were Victoria and South Australia.
