Red Cross red and green felt kangaroo 1963
c. 1963Red and green felt kangaroo with original tag sold to raise funds for the Australian Red Cross Society in 1963.
It has a green front, inside of the ears and stripe down its nose, while the back is mostly red aside from the continuation of the green stripe between its ears ending on the back of the neck.
It is all hand stitched with red cotton and has a pouch on the front. Its legs are splayed outwards and its tail extends out the back, all providing support for the kangaroo to stand. Facial features such as nose, mouth and eyes have been hand stitched in light green and red cotton.
It is stuffed with an unknown material to maintain its shape.
There is a cream coloured cardboard tag tied around the neck with orange thread. It has the Red Cross symbol and the year, 1963, printed in red. The price, 4 shillings and sixpence, is written in blue pen on the tag.
The kangaroo motif was used by the Red cross in Australia, as evidenced by this felt kangaroo and a private collection tin for the ARCS, Victorian Division, also held in the collection.
