Subcollections
Overview

Audio tape of an aural history performed by Royston Sinclair on the experiences of Barry Lee and Max Chitty, recorded in 1994 at the Freemasons Hotel.
The tape itself is unmarked but on the cover has been written Royston Sinclair, Barry Lee, Max Chitty. All aged 54 years. Together at School and work.
The tape is a 40 minute interview primarily about sheep farming and shearing, how the men involved grew up in shearing families and worked as shearers.
The stories include wages, conditions and the changes in the shearing industry over the years.
The second side of the tape expands this conversation, the three men involved talking about the changes to the farming industry in Toodyay, the change in population with weekendersand the development of smaller, more diverse industries.
Peter Chiffings work at the mill is given special mention in this regard, and the tone of the impact and development of the town away from farming is generally positive.
The final section of the interview then switches between the rabbit problem, gold mining, the changing roles of women and local characters.
The condition of the tape is good, with the sound quality of the interview also good.

Statement of significance

The aural history is an excellent overview of the changes to Toodyays rural industry over a 50year period, as seen through the life experiences of two local men. These items are of local significance but are nonetheless an excellent record of first-hand views and opinions.
If permission is granted, the interview could be an excellent accompaniment to future displays of Toodyays history and development.
