Baseball in the Goldfields in Western Australia started in the 1930s and went through periods of decline and revival over many decades.
In 1956, the first ever Country Week Carnival for country baseball associations was organised in Perth. They competed for the ‘Joe Thorn Trophy’. Thorn was a past Vice-President of the Chamber of Mines of Western Australia (1944-45), and the trophy was named in recognition of his services to baseball. The Goldfields team dominated the Country Carnivals, winning the trophy 10 times in 12 years.
This playing top was part of the Goldfields representative team's uniform in the 1961 Country Week Carnival.
