An A5-size program with buff-coloured front and back covers and four internal pages printed on off-white paper with maroon print. On the front cover, printed in maroon text are the name of the carnival and dates when it was held, as well as the name of the baseball league conducting the carnival and a sponsor's advertisement. The back cover displays two advertisements for local businesses and the name of the program's printer.

Historical information

The 1964 Country Week Baseball Carnival was held from May 30th to June 1st; conducted by the South Suburban Baseball League. Games were played at Medina Oval, with competing teams from the Goldfields, Bunbury, Great Southern Baseball League and South Suburban Baseball League.

The Country Week Baseball Carnival commenced in June 1956, when Goldfields won its first title. Goldfields were again successful in 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1963. In 1958 the title was won by Bunbury. C. Trezona, a member of every winning team, played with Bunbury in 1958.

The Carnival was played for the Joe Thorn Trophy. Thorn was the founder of Goldfields baseball, which was first played on an old mining dump in the early part of 1936. Up until 1963 the winning team was presented with the trophy by Bert Kortlang, a life-long friend of Joe Thorn. The pair played major league baseball together in America.

The program includes an image of the Chamber of Mines of Western Australia office bearers (1944-45), of which J.F. Thorn was a Vice-President.

Contextual Information

This 1964 record identifies baseball players from four Western Australian country and metropolitan leagues and illustrates the extent to which the sport was played in the State at that time. Players from Narrogin, Wagin and Katanning comprised the Great Southern Baseball League. Baseball is no longer played at state league level in the country locations.

The program was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Colin Smith, a member and coach of the 1964 Goldfields team.
