Signed baseball bat - Goldfields v. Australian Representatives 1979 exhibition game

Overview

A wooden Louisville Slugger baseball bat signed in blue pen by all participating players in the exhibition game between an Australian representatives team and a Goldfields Baseball League team. The bat is also inscribed, with black marker pen, with the names of the teams and the year date.

Historical information

On 1st July 1979 an exhibition baseball game was played between a Western Australian Goldfields Baseball League team and an Australian representative team. The game was played at the Kalgoorlie Oval and the Australian representative team included Western Australians Rod Byrne (Coach) and upcoming Juniors Warren Hughes, George Christie and Parris Mitchell.

Signatures on the ball include Goldfields players Brian Harvey (Coach), Trevor Russell, Jeff Oates, Ray Michell, Steve Bowden, Bill Nimmo, Colum O'Kane, John O'Hare, David Fraser (Captain), Don Cruickshank (Vice-Captain), Trevor Cruickshank, Phil Reeve and Glen Weir, as well as Parris Mitchell, Don Kyle, John Kyle, Warren Hughes, George Christie, Don Knapp, Colin Guest, Rod Byrne, Doug Mateljan and Mark Johns.

Contextual Information

This bat was a raffle prize won by David Fraser, who was Captain of the Goldfields Baseball League team. David has donated the bat to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives.

With the addition of players' signatures, the bat has social significance as a record of their participation in the sport of baseball.
