Overview

The 1938 Australian Baseball Carnival poster is printed in black and red on cream-coloured light card. The wording on the poster indicates when and where the carnival will be held and the teams that will compete. A hand-drawn image depicts a baseball runner's foot making contact with the base just before the baseball reaches the baseman.

Historical information

The 1938 Claxton Shield was the fifth annual Claxton Shield, an Australian national baseball tournament. It was held at the WACA Ground and Subiaco Oval in Perth, Western Australia from the 6th to 13th August. New South Wales won the Shield for the second time, successfully defending their title from the previous year. Hosts Western Australia had their best finish, losing to New South Wales in the final to finish second overall. The other participating teams were Victoria and South Australia.

Contextual Information

1938 was only the second year Western Australia competed in the Australian Baseball Carnival. It was the first time the State hosted the championship and the poster invites spectators to 'thrill to a new spectacle of interstate baseball'. The poster forms part of a scrapbook which belonged to 1938 Western Australian State team vice-captain Glen Dunstan. The scrapbook was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the Dunstan family.
