Overview

A 1961 Australian Baseball Championship Carnival official souvenir program for the Claxton Shield Series held in Adelaide. The A5-size program has a white front cover with blue and red text and an image of the Claxton Shield trophy. The back cover is white with blue text and has details of who printed the program, as well as an advertisement for 'S.A. Canine News'.

Historical information

The 1961 Claxton Shield was the 22nd annual Claxton Shield, an Australian baseball tournament, and was held at Norwood Oval in Adelaide, South Australia from August 1-14. The participants were South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. The series was won by the home team South Australia, claiming their seventh, and third consecutive, Shield title.

Contextual Information

The 1961 program was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Kaye Greenham, the Western Australian pitcher representing his State for the fourth time at the 1961 championships. In 1960 he had been named in the Claxton Shield All-Star team. Greenham was a 2014 inductee into the Baseball Australia Hall of Fame, and an inaugural inductee into the Baseball WA Hall of Fame in 2021. This program bears his signature.

Statement of significance

This signed program is a rare and well provenanced addition to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives' collection of baseball programs, and is in good condition. The information it contains is historically significant in the history of Australian baseball.
