Claremont Teachers College.

Historical information

Claremont Teachers College built of Cottesloe Limestone, was completed in 1901. In 1902, the first students and staff, thirty nine in all, were enrolled. The building, on 12 acres bounded by Goldsworthy Road, Princess Road, Agett Road and Bay Road, Claremont, overlooked Freshwater Bay. The kookaburra, swan and zanthorrea were incorporated in the original design for college's crest. The college was established to train teachers in Western Australia. Previously students had to travel to South Australia for teacher training.

In 1905 the East Claremont Practising School (the Prac) was built adjoining the college to provide trainee teachers from the college an environment to practise teaching.

One of a series of photographs of staff, students, buildings, and activities around Claremont Teachers College taken by Roy Grace between 1927-1928 when a student at Claremont Teachers College. During this time Roy was one of the photographers who contributed to the WA Trainee magazine.

After attending Claremont Teachers College, Roy became a high school science teacher. Roy's last posting was as the Deputy Principal of Churchlands Senior High School in 1972.
