First World War Black and White Photograph of Captured Turkish Field Gun

1915 - 1919
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing a large wooden gun carriage that has been captured by troopers. The 4 wheeled carriage has its gun and shield at the rear and various items including fabric towards the front of the carriage. The wheels are spoked with iron rims and there are chains attached to the 2 rear wheels that trail behind the carriage. The carriage is pulled by 4 oxen. There are three troopers standing close to the carriage and another man is mounted with his horses head visible on the right-hand side of the image. Further away are two other troopers examining something on the ground with their horses in the distance. The terrain is bare with just a small hill in the background. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription describing the image. The photograph has a small border and overall is in good condition.

Historical information

It is possible that the inscription refers to a place called Huj where the 8th, 9th and 10th Light Horse Regiments were involved in action on 8 November 1917. In the book Gallipoli to Tripoli History of the Light Horse Regiment 1914-1919, Browning and Gill describe the action on that day that included the capture of several large machine guns and their bullock teams.
