First World War Black and White Photograph of a 'Boxing Match' at Marakeb

1917
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing a large group of men watching a boxing match. Most men are seated, with a few standing on a mound at the rear so they can see the ring. There are also 4 horses visible at the rear. The boxing ring is raised up and appears to be built from sandbags. One boxer can be seen sitting in his “corner” with at least 2 men kneeling by his side. Another man appears to be fanning the boxer with fabric. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription. The photograph has a small border and is in good condition, although quite faded.

Historical information

In his book Westralian Cavalry in the War, 10th Light Horse A.I.F. Lieutenant Colonel Olden explains that even though training continued throughout, time at Marakeb saw a great improvement in the men. As they recovered their fitness, sport was very important and boxing contests became very popular. An improvised stadium was erected on the beach, where open competitions were held. He notes that the 10th Regiment supplied its quota of boxers, but the only championship secured was that of the light-weight class won by Trooper Ditchburn of B Squadron.
