First World War Black and White Photograph of a Building in Cairo
1915 - 1919A small black and white photograph showing a large 6 story building that sits on the corner block of a Cairo Street. The building has large windows and entrance doors with ornate decorations on the brick above the ground floor windows. Two ground floor windows have canopies to the street. Above the canopied window is an advertising board with words in French and Egyptian. There are small trees outside of the building and 3 double lamps can be seen in the street. The image has the building angled forwards. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription. The photograph has a small border and is in good condition, although there is a small stain along the right-hand side that shows front and back.
This image depicts the Davies Bryan Store in Cairo that opened in 1910. Situated in the Sharia Emad Al Din district, the haberdashery store set up by two Welsh brothers was the largest of its kind in Egypt. The store survived well into the 1950s when it was sold. In the 1960s it was taken over by a state-owned insurance company and in 2008 it was purchased by a real estate investment firm and still awaits restoration.
