WWII era trench art gilded coin bracelet for child dated 1943
c. 1943World War Two era trench art Australian coin bracelet. It features a central sixpence which is dated 1943.
Either side of the coin are a series of ornate links featuring a stylised, symmetrical bow-tie or winged bracket shape. The centre narrows into a thin bridge while both sides expand outward into curved, decorative lobes. The top and bottom profiles have smooth, semicircular indents and the outer corners terminate in subtle decorative points.
One half of each link is attached directly to the coin and then a further two links are attached by metal loops to the catches at either end.
One end features a metal ring while the other has a hook made from flat metal which is bent over and tapers to a rounded point. The hook fits over the ring to secure the bracelet.
This sweetheart bracelet is one of a large number of items in the collection made from coins. These include jewellery such as brooches and bracelets, small photo frames, and other bric a brac.
Many of these items were made by servicemen and could be called trench art. This is sometimes confirmed by engraving on the reverse side of the coins.
Due to the very small diameter of the closed bracelet, it is believed that this was made for a young child.
