CUP AND SAUCER: WEMBLEY WARE, GREEN LUSTRE, SUBIACO MUNICIPALITY TENNIS SET

Overview

From a set of teacups and saucers. This style of teacup and saucer was known as a 'tennis set'.

a) Teacup is lime green in colour with a gold rim and handle, and a white, glazed interior. The surface of the cup is plain, except for a gold detailing on its front (with the handle facing to the right).

Marking: At the centre of the image is the old Subiaco crest surrounded by gold, olive leaf vector. Around the crest in a banner reads 'SUBIACO MUNICIPALITY'.

Base: On the bottom of the cup is a maker's mark of intwined 'B&W' which is surrounded in a circle by: 'QUALITY WEMBLEY WARE' and a crown at the top.

b) Saucer is lime green luster in colour with a gold rim. Gold raised curved edge in middle and small raised circle to hold teacup. Used for holding scones or sandwiches with a cup of tea.

Base: No markings.

Wembley Ware

Statement of significance

Historic: Items were made by Wembly Ware who were a local Subiaco pottery manufacturer.
Condition: Item is part of a set (the donor form mentions that the cups come with accompanying saucers, but at the date of accession these could not be found).
Provenance: The ranger who possed the cups before donating them to the Mayor thought that they would be of future use and took them home where he stored them until 2013 (see research for full story).
