Historical information

William Thomas Menagh was born in Ballarat Victoria, his next of kin was his father, George Menagh. On his enlistment papers he identifys his trade as a clerk. Menagh joined the AIF on 30 August 1915 as a member of the 11th Battalion/10th Light Horse. On 1 November 1915 he embarked at Fremantle per A24 Benella. On 27 October 1916 he qualified as a 1st Class Gunner for a Lewis Machine Gun. During his service, Menagh had several AWOLS and was consequently denied pay. Additionally, he was admitted to hospital on a number of occassions for various ailments. He embarked at Suez for Australia on 22 December 1918.
