About organisation
The Kojonup Historical Collection is now managed by the Shire of Kojonup and is housed in the Old Post Office, Military Barracks, Elverd Cottage and Machinery Sheds.
The Old Post Office houses documents, china, photographs and fabrics collected from Kojonup residents or former residents.(Spring Street, Kojonup)
The Military Barrack houses items from early European settlement, (1837), Enrolled Pensioner guards and a small number of Noongar items.(Barracks Place, Kojonup)
Elverd Cottage was built by William McDonnell; an Enrolled Pensioner Guard in 1854. On his death it was sold to the Henri Larsen who rented it to the Elverd family until in 1891 it was bought by C.E. Elverd and remained in the Elverd family until the death of Charlie Elverd in 1979, when it passed to C.A. Harrison (a nephew) who donated a portion of land and the cottage to the Kojonup Shire.
The Cottage displays items reflecting a simple domestic life in the late 19th century and the first half of 20th century. It also includes a simple Cottage Garden, created by Charles and Annie Elverd. (Soldier Road Kojonup)
The Machinery sheds located adjacent to Elverd Cottage house a collection of horse drawn farm and transport machinery. The Horse Power and Harness Display panels put all the machinery in order of use and context, showing the progression from horse to diesel driven machines used in the Kojonup District since the mid 1800's. The display also includes a horse and bullock Harness implements. (Soldier Road Kojonup - next to Elverd Cottage)
