About organisation
The Katanning Historical society was founded in 1937 and is believed to be the oldest affiliated society in WA. The aim of the society is to collect and preserve the history of the district. Archives include documents of Local, State and National Significance.
The museum complex comprises of:
(a) Methodist Church (1905). Leased from the Shire of Katanning in 2010 by the Historical Society. The main church area has now been set to display varied aspects of historical significance of the Katanning district such as early pioneers, Frederick Henry Piesse, Medical, World War One, businesses, and sporting memorabilia. The adjacent hall is the administration and storage area for the society.
(b) First Government School (1894). Converted to a historical museum in 1969, it is one of the earliest permanent structures in the Town still existing and it displays household memorabilia donated by Katanning residents or former residents.
(c) Silver Band Hall. Originally located in Amherst Street, it was relocated to its present location in 1986. The Silver Band Hall has significance in its relationship to a strong community musical group (Silver Band) that developed in Katanning. It represents the importance of music in the district and the strength of community support for cultural events. It will be setup as an interactive Music Museum, featuring trumpets, trombones and drums.
(d) Donglocking School Building. In 1945 the building was transported from the Donglocking School (Wagin Shire) and placed on the Katanning Primary School site and used as a classroom for many years. Since 1968 the building has had many uses. Negotiations between the Education Department, Katanning All Schools Archives committee and the Shire of Katanning resulted in the relocation to the Historical Society site. Not only important for its historical value as being the last building of its era, is its continual use by the Education Department but because it has been setup as a school display, which allows visiting groups to interact in educational activities.
