Overview

This is a Khaki scout hat. It has a hard crown and a wide brim. Around the brim is a brown leather band and a round metal insignia at the front. The metal badge has a grey metal outer circle and a red enamel inner circle. In the middle of the inner circle is a the head of a wolf which is also made of metal and there are four metal lines radiating out from the wolf's head. There is a cotton cord which goes through two eyelets at the top sides of the brim and is a chin strip and ties in a bow below the badge.

Historical information

It is an Australian Wolf Cubs Boy Scouts hat. It was worn by Mrs Mary Elizabeth Newport (1894-1983). Mrs Newport served the Katanning Scout movement for 40 years. Mrs M.E. Newport of the 72nd Wolf Cub Boy Scouts Katanning was awarded the 'Medal of Merit' on 15th September 1947 (West Australian Paper).

Inscriptions and markings

On the metal insignia below the wolf's head are the words 'DO YOUR BEST' Moto written in grey enamel on a scroll of yellow enamel.

On the inside of the hat is the inscription 'Made expressly for Boy Scouts Assn. Perth'.
