BLACKSMITH FLATTENER TOOL WITH METAL CORKSCREW HANDLE

Overview

A rectangular solid metal base, which flares out to a square head. A curved metal rod is connected to the base, as a handle,with a spiral / corkscrew hand grip.

Historical information

This tool was collected by Chris and Terry Stanton while walking though the area where the Cardup brickworks was started in 1897. The Cardup brickworks was one of the earliest shale brickworks to start in the district and is still operating today.
This tool was used by blacksmiths to flatten metal that was being worked in the forge. It was potentially used at the brickworks blacksmith forge and used to repair tools and machines at the brockworks.

Statement of significance

A blacksmith flattner tool found and possibly used in the early years of the Cardup Brickworks. The Cardup brickworks was found in 1897 and was one of the early shale commercial brickworks founded in the district. The brickwork industry has been an important local industry for over 120 years. Local bricks have been used across the state to build public, private, commercial and residential buildings. The tool was found by local residents Chris and Terry Stanton who enjoyed collecting old tools. The tool was a part of their collection up until 2019.
