BROWN CASE - CWA

Overview

Brown case, with a hinged lid, internally strengthened with wooden struts around the lid, also has a bracket to prevent it from opening too far. It has twin spring loaded, lockable catches on the front, (No key), and a centrally located handle mounted on two "D" rings. All the corners are re-enforced and held in place by metal rivets along with two strips along the base. There are five larger rivets on the base. Text on the lid, inside and outside, also on the right hand end and rear. Pat. No. inside of handle.

Historical information

The case was supplied to the C.W.A., Kelmscott branch when it was established in 1944, and remained in their possession until their closure in 2019. The case was used to store the official records of the branch. The Kelmscott branch of the C.W.A held their meetings in the St. Mary in the Valley Hall, Kelmscott.
The Kelmscott branch of the C.W.A provided an important place for local women to meet, socialise and well as engage in the learning, sharing and exhibiting of a variety of artist and domestic skills from singing, poetry, recitations, plays, cooking and crafts.

Statement of significance

HIGH
The case was supplied to the newly formed Kelmscott Branch of the C.W.A in 1944. It was used to store the branches official records, i.e. minutes and correspondence. The case was used by the branch right up to its closure in 2019.
The case represents and tells the story of a key community social organisation that was all about women, run by women for women. The organisation played an important role in the social lives of a number of Kelmscott women and promoted the learning of new skills and the sharing and exhibiting of their key domestic and artistic skills.
