Statement of significance

An example of the tools supplied to railway workers for the maintenance of railway lines when wooden sleepers were used. The tool was used to remove railway spikes. The spikes held a metal plate in place which in turn secured the metal rails to the sleepers. Today most of the rails are supported by concrete sleepers.
This tool was made by the Western Australian Government Railway and used by staff to maintain state railway lines. This tool was lost when work was being done on the railway line in Byford.
