Historical information

The Armadale-Kelmscott District Glee Club was formed in 1920 and on Saturday 11 December gave its first concert at the Armadale Mechanics institute on Jull Street with Mr N.L Skewes acting as the conductor and Mrs Skewers playing the piano. The concert involved a number of solo and choral performances and raised money for the Children's Hospital and the establishment of Memorial Park in Armadale (The West Australian 14 December 1920, p6).
In 1921 the Armadale-Kelmscott District Glee Club, held their second concert to help raise money for the Memorial Park, and Parkerville Homes. The concert was again held at the Armadale Mechanics institute on Jull Street. In the concert program there were 32 listed members of the Glee Club. Two of the solo performers were Mr Hartland Richards and Mr Norman Skewes, who were both WWI veterans. The concert was performed in two part with an interval.
The program originally belonged to Francis Edith 'Edie' Davidson (nee Walton) born in 1899, who was a member of the Glee Club (Miss Walton). Edie attended Armadale School where she met her future husband John 'Jack' Davidson. After school Edie trained as a teacher and returned to teach at the Armadale School in the early 1920s. In 1927 Edie married Jack Davidson in Armadale. Jack worked with his father David Johnston Davidson at their blacksmith business on the corner of Jull Street and Third Road.
Prominent members of the Armadale District Glee Club included World War One veterans Norman Skewes, Edgar Adams and Hartland Richards, members of the Serls family who were key players in establishing the Congregational Church in the district, local business owners and local councillors.
In 1922 the club changed their name to the Armadale Districts Glee Club.
