STREET SIGN - AQUA TUBE

Overview

Rectangle metal sign, blue enamelled with white text on both sides [AQUA TUBE]. Aluminium boarder along top and bottom edges. Holes drilled at both ends. Text a form of adhesive sticker. Text on one side complete. Text on reverse side missing all letters though outline of each letter and direction arrow is visible. On front side triangle direction pointer in front of the K and pointing away from the A. On reverse side outline of similar pointer at end of the E and pointing away.

Historical information

Street direction sign for the Armadale Aquatic Centre Aqua Tube located at the intersection of Railway Avenue and Third Avenue in Kelmscott. The Aqua Tube was located at the Armadale Aquatic Centre on champion Drive Kelmscott. The sign would have been installed in c2002. The Aqua Tubes opened in 1983 and operated through to 2017.
The signs were removed in February 2021 during the construction work on the Denny Avenue level crossing removal and the installation of a rail over road underpass at Davis Road.

MEDIUM
This street sign is a reminder of the existence of the Armadale Aqua Tubes located at the Armadale Aquatic Centre between 1983 and 2017. The tubes were a popular local leisure activity for children and adults. This sign was located near the Kelmscott Train Station and was part of a group of signs to key community facilities that could be accessed by heading down Third Avenue.
The sign represents the loss of a important and once popular leisure activity for local families during the 1980s to 2010s.
