Overview

Rectangle metal sign, blue enamelled with white text on both sides [KELMSCOTT BMX]. Aluminium boarder along top and bottom edges. Holes drilled at both ends. Text a form of adhesive sticker. Text on one side complete. Text on reverse side missing letters and has incomplete letters though outline of each letter is visible. On front side triangle direction pointer in front of the K and pointing away from the K. On reverse side outline of similar pointer at end of the X and pointing away. Letters remaining on reverse side [ EL C TT B X]

Historical information

Street direction sign for the Kelmscott BMX track located at the intersection of John Dunn Memorial Park, on Third Avenue in Kelmscott. The BMX track was constructed by the local community and was located in the north east corner of the park. was located at the Armadale Aquatic Centre on champion Drive Kelmscott. The sign would have been installed in c2002. The BMX track was opened in 1981 and was slowly expanded over the next ten years. The track was used by the Kelmscott Bicycle Motocross (BMX) Club who stated they had over 200 children regularity racing. by 1982 the club boasted to be the largest BMX Club in Western Australia. Over time the popularity of BMX racing declined and soon the track fell into disrepair. It was removed by the City of Armadale in 2014.
The signs were removed in February 2021 during the construction work on the Denny Avenue level crossing removal and the installation of a rail over road underpass at Davis Road.

MEDIUM
This street sign is a reminder of the existence of the Kelmscott BMX track located at John Dunn Oval between 1981 and 2014. The BMX track was a popular local leisure activity for children and adults. This sign was located near the Kelmscott Train Station and was part of a group of signs to key community facilities that could be accessed by heading down Third Avenue.
