Historical information

The common prayer and psalm book was owned by Violet White, the daughter of Edward Wharton White. Edward was a railway surveyor who worked at laying out the timber railway lines associated with Canning Miles. Lionel White, Edward's brother managed the timber mill. The White family first lived at Canning Mills where the children were educated by Miss Spencer a governess. Around 1900 the family moved to Kelmscott and joined the St Mary's in the Valley congregation and the children attended the Kelmscott State School. The book was possibly acquired around the time the family moved to Kelmscott and joined the church. Stephen O'Brien, and relative of Violet White recalls his great aunt Julia telling him that in the early 1900s the children called Kelmscott State School 'Kemmy School'. In 1977 when Stephen was attending Kelmscott High School the students called the school 'Kemmy High School'.
