First World War Black and White Photographic Postcard of the 14th Australian General Hospital

c. 1916 - 1919
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing and open courtyard with trees in front of a building. The image shows two sides of the building which edge the courtyard. The building has 2 stories and is divided into small square sections by pillars. There is an open passageway on the ground level – with windows visible – and a second story with a type of grill on each section. In the centre of the courtyard are two benches and a few seats with five people sitting. The image is blurred on the left-hand side. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription. There are a few stains on this. The photograph has a small border and is in good condition.

Historical information

The Egyptian Army Barracks at Abbassia (on the outskirts of Cairo) were used as an Australian hospital from August 1915 until 1919. As well as war injuries, there were several diseases associated with the region, particularly malaria, dysentery and pneumonia, which kept the hospitals overworked throughout the Sinai and Palestine campaigns.

Contextual information

This photograph is part of a collection of Sgt Frederick Ernest BRUCE 243 who served in the 3rd Machine Gun Brigade of the 10th Light Horse Regiment. It can be seen from his service records that Sgt BRUCE was in hospital in Alexandria on 11 December 1918 and discharged 7 January 1919. It is therefore possible that this image reflects that hospital stay.
