Historical information

Walter Cherry was born in Manchester and served as an apprentice to his Father John Nelson Cherry and worked his way up to be in charge of the dye house.

He migrated to Western Australia in 1911 and founded Cherry and Company Ltd. and lived at 1 St Quentin Avenue, Ormerod House, in Claremont. He served as a Claremont Councillor from 1919-1923.

According to postal directories, Walter Cherry & Co Ltd, Dyers & Cleaners, had a shop in Bay View Terrace next to Rickard's Shoe Store until 1918. The work appears to have been carried out at 3 Divers St (St Quentin Ave). Walter's Business expanded and eventually had a City Depot located at 281 Murray Street, Perth.

Married to Winifred Maude Ormerod until her death in 1931. Children: Harry Ormerod (b.1916), James Nelson (b.1916), Winifred, Mona and Lucy. Married Mabel Anne Daniel in 1935.
