GAME: 'FAIRYLAND' BOARDGAME
c. 1930A rectangular board game printed on one side in colour on cardboard, with a red border. Titled 'Fairyland for any number of players. Brimful of Interest, Excitement and Skill'. Bottom left corner has the word 'COPYRIGHT'.
The title “FAIRYLAND” is printed in large decorative letters at upper right. The game features a spiral track of 0–120 spaces arranged roughly in a continuous loop from outer to inner. The background is yellow-toned; the track spaces are pale blue with black numbering, interspersed with small vignette illustrations depicting fairy-tale and storybook scenes (e.g. characters labelled “Pirates”, “Giants Castle”, “Mother Goose”, “Red Indians”, “Aladdin”, “The Three Bears”, “Waterfall”, “Wishing Well”, “Puss in Boots”, etc.). Players attempt to be the first to reach the Fairy Palace.
The board includes instructions printed in text in some spaces: e.g., “Throw even number go to 41” (Pirates), “Throw odd number go to 59” (Giants Castle), “Throw 3 go to 60” (Waterfall), “Throw 5 go to 98” (Cinderella), “Go to Fairy Palace” (inner circle), etc. Spaces appear to encourage “movement” along the board according to dice (or spinner) throws. There is also a “booking office” printed at the top left with “all round trip to Fairyland - all aboard, adults 1/-, children half price” and a small decorative design including a cart and driver figure.
The board shows crease lines and surface wear consistent with folding (once or repeatedly), with slight colour loss, edge wear, and some minor tears at fold/edges. Overall the printed design remains legible and intact.
One of 6 games boards from the same donor.
The games belonged to donor's husband who grew up in Nedlands. He used the games in childhood in the 1940s, and then passed them down to their 3 children. In the late 1960s and 1970s the games were used at their family home in Shenton Park, and then retained until donated.
