RADIO: WOODEN CRYSTAL RADIO RECEIVER WITH HEADSET AND TIN OF CRYSTAL DETECTOR, SEDGWICK COLLECTION

Overview

Homemade crystal radio receiver with headset and tin of crystal detector.

Radio:

The radio housing is made out of a wooden, dark-coloured, rectangular-shaped box. The box has two hinges between the left and top sides, however the top side has been permanently fixed to the four sides of the box with eight flat top screws.

Fixed to the front edge of the top side of the box is the vile for the crystal, as well as a thin, brass radiometer with hand engravings positioned to the centre-left of the top of the box. The front side of radio has two black plastic knobs, the lower control on the left for power, and the higher control on the right for channel adjustment. The channel adjustment knob is connected to the brass radiometer via a wire on the inside of the box. At the rear of the box is an open cavity for access to the interior radio of the radio. The interior contains a blue wire coil to the left, and other radio components fixed to the sides of the interior.

There are two, green felt pads at the bottom of the box.

Headset:

Emmco headset. Two black-coloured plastic and metal earpieces connected to a metal, fabric-covered headband.

Electrical cord:

The light brown coloured electrical cord is detached from headset. The copper wires are frayed and exposed on one end of the cord. The other end of the cord which attaches to the headset is wrapped with brown and red coloured thread.

Tin of Crystal Detector:

Small tin of crystal detector, kept inside the radio. The tin is black in colour with red lettering on the lid reading 'THE MIGHTY ATOM / WIRELESS CRYSTAL CATSWHISKER / Sole Distributors / Britains Best Crystal Ltd.' Inside the tin are spare radio components, wire, and a crystal, kept within cotton padding.
