Dave Mickle Shield
c. 1964A wooden shield-shaped trophy with a central silver-plated, shield-shaped plaque. The plaque has a scrolled border with an internal laurel wreath, surrounding a central image of a pitcher and batter on a black background and green foreground. Below the metal shield is a silver-plated scroll, engraved with the name of the trophy—the 'Dave Mickle Shield'. Eight smaller silver-plated shields surround the central embellishments. Four of these shields are engraved with the names and year dates of the winners of the perpetual trophy.
Dave Mickle was a prominent baseball player from the 1930s to the 1970s. He was instrumental in forming the Victoria Park Baseball Club in 1936, which was one of the inaugural clubs in the West Australian Baseball League. In 1974 Mickle was Patron of the WABL for one year.
Mickle's involvement in baseball included donating trophies, in his name, to be awarded to the most valuable player in a baseball team representing Western Australia. The Mickle Medal, for example, was awarded to the Western Australian MVP at the conclusion of each Claxton Shield Series. A Dave Mickle Trophy was awarded following the interstate Night Baseball Series in the 1950s. The Dave Mickle Trophy pictured here is linked to the Western Australian Country Week Carnivals held in the 1960s but its significance is unknown. The names of four teams are engraved on the shield—Bunbury 1964, Bunbury 1965, South Suburban 1966, Goldfields 1967, however, those teams are not linked to the Country Week Carnival winners in those respective years.

This Dave Mickle Shield was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Neale Harvey. Harvey was a Western Australian baseball player from the Goldfields Baseball League who participated in the Country Week Carnivals between city and country teams, in the 1960s. The last time this shield was awarded was to the Goldfields team in 1967.
A rare item of historic and social significance as the Museum has few records of the Goldfields' baseball heritage.
